Mircea Eliade papers, 1926-1998 (inclusive)

The majority of the Mircea Eliade Papers were produced during the years Eliade spent at the University of Chicago (1957-1986). However, much of the correspondence is from the years he spent in Paris (1945-1957), and some correspondence with family and friends dates from his studies in India (1928-1930). Eliade's correspondents includes scholars such as Joseph Campbell and David Carrasco, the translators Mary Park Stevens and Mac Linscott Ricketts, the poet Andrei Codrescu, Princess Domnițe Ileana of Romania and the secretary for Pope John Paul II. Shortly before to Eliade's death in 1986, a fire in his office damaged a portion of his correspondence and other papers beyond recognition.
